Diamond in the rough

The recent acquisition of the Jewish Community center will be one of the best moves that the Reading School Board made in 2007. This was the only piece of property in the city that was already not on the tax rolls.

When you analyze the property you quickly realize the potential for this property. #1 is 17 acres,#2 is a building with a cafeteria, auditorium, gym #3 plenty of room for expansion of classrooms.

The potential of another school on the remaining acres. It was another proud moment of my presidency.

I feel the need to clsrify a few things. The JCC property is not the only property not on the tax rolls, and should I add suitable property to that description. The school district already owns 5.1 acres at W Windsor and Spring sts and there is the square block area at 20th and perkiomen that is city owned and has been vacant 30+ years.

If you analyze the property you will find it will serve the community much better used and taxed as the R1 property it is zoned. Perhaps that is why a school is not a permitted use in R1zones according to the city zoning law.

Several years ago the JCC tried to have the zoning changed and the residents of northeast Reading, and the city as a whole turned it down. This should be a clue.....a really big one.

I also and still pondering why the school district is paying 7 million for a property that has been appraised ar 5 million. It's not like they are at risk of being outbid.....the property has no other potential buyers, according to the officers of the JCC. They claim the land is useless for any other use. Seems to be a good business person, when they have the seller over a barrel would offer a low ball figure and bargain up form there.

Ahhhh that must be the problem. I'm assuming we're dealing with good business people......shame on me.
