A Great Clash Of Values

In 1977 Democratic Governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts vetoed a bill requiring public school teachers to lead children in the Pledge of Allegiance. When then vice president George Bush criticized his veto during the 1988 presidential campaign, Dukakis and his supporters went ballistic. They charged that Bush was impugning Dukakis's patriotism, and called the debate over the pledge a "frivolous" issue.

But Bush wasn't questioning the governor's patriotism. He was questioning the governor's values.
